The Pen Cafe - Exterior No, we wouldn’t survive long there. All jokes aside though, as part of a series of attempt to get to know New West a bit more, I took a foodie coworker’s advice and paid a visit to The Pen Cafe for breakfast. After circling around the surreal suburban community a few times (directions), we finally found ourselves in front of what looks like a miniature castle with fresh paint. It sure didn’t look like your everyday cafe and bistro, and that’s because its located inside what was once the admin building of the B.C. penitentiary, built over 100 years ago. No doubt significant renos and paint were needed in more recent times to turn the interior into a cozy table and booth style family diner that plays on elements of its origins.
Their jail themed menu had very common diner fare, and we had a taste of their Officer’s omelet and Billy Miner’s Benedict
The Pen Cafe - Eggs Benny
The food is about what you’d expect from a good diner, but the location is worth checking out on a sunny day if you’re around the area.
